A temperature probe is a sensing instrument used to measure the temperature of surfaces, liquids, gases, machinery, food, laboratory samples, and industrial processes. A device may also be described as a temperature probe sensor, a long temperature probe, or a high temperature probe thermometer, and the right choice depends on temperature range, sensor type, probe design, response time, accuracy, and instrument compatibility.
RS Philippines stocks an extensive range of RTD, thermistor, and thermocouple temperature probes in immersion, penetration, surface, air, and long-reach formats, with a variety of probe lengths, sheath materials, and connector types for laboratory, industrial, and facilities applications.
Three sensor technologies are widely used for industrial and laboratory temperature measurement: RTDs, NTC thermistors, and thermocouples. Each offers different characteristics in terms of range, accuracy, response speed, and stability. These sensor types are also available in surface, immersion, penetration, air, flexible, and long temperature probe formats.
An RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) measures temperature by monitoring the change in electrical resistance of a metallic element, most commonly platinum. Pt100 and Pt1000 sensors are the most widely used RTDs and are standardized under IEC 60751.
RTD temperature probes are commonly used in laboratories, industrial monitoring, process control applications, and HVAC systems where high accuracy, repeatability, and long-term stability are required. They generally provide more accurate and stable measurements than thermocouples, although response times may be slower depending on the probe design.
An NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor is a semiconductor sensing element whose resistance decreases as temperature increases. These temperature probe sensors are widely used in HVAC equipment, electronics, battery-management systems, medical devices, and appliances. They offer high sensitivity and fast response times over a relatively limited temperature range but are typically less linear than RTDs across wider temperature spans.
A thermocouple consists of two dissimilar metal conductors joined together to produce a thermoelectric voltage that varies with temperature. Thermocouple probes are widely used in machinery, ovens, furnaces, exhaust systems, and other high-temperature industrial applications. Standardised thermocouple types, including K, J, and T, are defined by IEC 60584, with each type offering different operating characteristics and temperature ranges.
Thermocouples generally provide faster response times and wider temperature ranges than RTDs, making them well suited to demanding industrial environments. However, they may offer lower long-term stability and accuracy than RTD-based probes.
Beyond internal sensor technology, temperature probes are also categorized by their mechanical design and how they physically interface with the target medium.
Temperature probes and sensors at RS are used in many professional and industrial environments across the Philippines.
