Basically, a Reed Switch is an electrical switch that works with a magnetic field and consists of two thin, easily magnetised, metal reeds all sealed within a glass tube, usually filled with an inert gas. The reeds are positioned within the sealed tube close together but do not touch. When a magnetic field operates close to the reed switch it then becomes magnetised which causes the reeds to make physical contact which in turn closes an electrical circuit allowing current to flow through the reed switch. When the magnetic field is removed all magnetisation is removed and the reeds lose contact returning to their normal state (not touching, open) which then stops the electrical circuit.
