A torquing screwdriver has a torque-limiting clutch that allows a limit on how much force is applied beyond a certain threshold, which is ideal for precise connections that need to be under a certain torque limit.
Flathead (Slotted) Screwdriver
The flathead screwdriver, also known as a slotted screwdriver, is one of the most recognized hand tools, featuring a flat blade tip designed to fit screws with a single straight recess across the head. Its primary function includes fastening screws in older fixtures, light-duty hardware, and certain electrical terminals where a single-slot drive remains the standard.
Selecting the correct blade width and thickness is essential. A poorly fitted flat blade screwdriver will slip easily, risking damage to both the screw slot and the surrounding work surface.
Tri-Wing Screwdriver
Tri-wing screwdriver tools are used to fasten a specialty head type frequently found on consumer electronics, gaming consoles, cameras, and some home appliances where tamper-resistance is built into the design. The tips are often very small, making it critical to use the correct bit size to avoid damaging delicate screw heads that are difficult to replace. Pozidriv Screwdriver

Sizing conventions vary across the different types of screwdriver heads, so here's a quick breakdown of the most common systems:
- Phillips Screwdriver Sizes: Phillips screwdriver sizes are designated by a number preceded by "PH", ranging from PH0 (smallest) through PH1, PH2, PH3, and PH4 (largest). PH2 is the most commonly used size for general-purpose work, while PH0 and PH1 are typical in electronics and precision applications.
- Torx Screwdriver Sizes: Torx screwdriver sizes are indicated by the letter "T" followed by a number, such as T10, T15, and T20, scaling up to T45 and beyond. Smaller T-values are used in electronics and automotive trim, while larger sizes appear in heavy machinery and structural assemblies.
- Flathead Screwdriver Sizes: For flathead screwdriver sizes, the key measurements are blade width and blade thickness, typically noted in millimeters. Selecting a blade that fills the screw slot correctly is essential, too narrow and it will rock, too wide and it will damage the surrounding material.
- Hex Screwdriver Sizes: Hex screwdrivers are sized in either metric (e.g., 2mm, 4mm, 5mm) or imperial (e.g., 5/32", 3/16") measurements. Always confirm which standard your fastener uses before selecting a tool, as metric and imperial sizes are not interchangeable.
Parts of a Screwdriver
A screwdriver consists of three main parts each responsible for a different function or characteristic of the tool.
Screwdriver Handle
Screwdriver handles are used for gripping and are generally shaped to prevent rolling on flat surfaces. They can also be ergonomically-designed to improve comfort when gripping. The materials used in the manufacturing process have changed over time and there is now also more variety for tools intended for use in specific applications. Most commonly, the handles are ergonomic and made of a composite of hard plastic such as cellulose acetate and rubber. They can also be covered in a non-slip, soft material like thermoplastic rubber to improve grip.
Shaft or Shank
The screwdriver shaft or shank is commonly made of strong steel to ensure that bending or twisting deformation does not occur when applying force. The shaft will be rounded or hexagonal to allow a spanner or wrench to be used to apply increased torque. The shaft is generally made from a different material and has a different coloration than the drive tip, which can be interchangeable.
Drive Tip or Bit
