Weighing Scales

Weighing scales measure the weight or mass of an item or load and provide a reading in kilograms (kg), pounds (lb), ounces (oz) or stones. From pocket scales with 10g capacity to a hanging scale with 200kg capacity for industrial use, they come in a variety of types and weight capabilities to suit different applications. All scales should ultimately be accurate and reliable.

What are the different types of weighing scales?

The kitchen weighing scales we use to weigh out food and the bathroom weighing scales we use to weigh ourselves for health reasons are not too dissimilar to those used in professional environments. Common types include:

Pocket scale:These scales are small and portable, but can still be used in many of the same ways as regular-sized weighing scales. They’re commonly used by schools, jewellers and laboratories for measuring smaller objects.

Bench scale: Usually similar in style or slightly smaller than bathroom weighing scales, bench scales are commonly used in packing departments and jewellers. They’re robust, often portable and ideal for weighing small objects, and can also be used for counting. Bench scales sit comfortably on any worktop, counter or desk.

Hanging scale: These scales weigh items attached to a hook or cradle below the scale’s display. They’re used around the home for weighing luggage to ensure its within airline limits, and used commercially for weighing animal feeds, fruit and vegetables and mailbags. Industrial weighing scales can also be used for laboratory and agricultural applications, and provide information for fiscal, legislative and operational purposes.

Platform scale:Platform scales are used to weigh large volumes or bulky items, and are often made of stainless steel for easy cleaning. They’re typically used for more heavy duty weighing in manufacturing, food processing and warehouses, as well as weighing large animals on farms or in veterinary centres.

Counting scale: These scales can save time and effort by counting the items placed on them by multiples of a predetermined mass. They’re commonly used in packing departments and stores, as well as the engineering, medical and pharmaceutical industries.
