    Door Catches

Door catches are simple mechanical devices that are installed inside of cabinet doors to ensure that the door doesn't open without human manipulation. They are different from door latches which lock a door closed and need to be manually unlocked. Door catches prevent elements like wind or pressure from accidentally opening doors, but open by pulling.

It's important to note the distinction between latches and catches. For example, a magnetic door catch can be easily opened by hand, whereas a magnetic door latch is a strong and secure magnetic lock.

Door catches are almost exclusively featured in cabinets or dressers, however they can be used on full-sized doors as well. They come in two parts with one end fitted to the bottom of a cabinet and the other fitted to the bottom of the door.

RS Components carries a range of door catches that are suitable for any cabinet door, including magnetic door catches.

    Types of Door Catch

Choosing the right door catch ultimately comes down to personal preference as catches perform the same function regardless of style. Of the many types of catch, the most common are magnetic door catches and grabbers. That said, there are many subtypes of catch that fall under the umbrella of magnetic.

Imagine a kitchen cupboard or cabinet where you store dry goods. A magnetic cabinet catch will be placed on the bottom of the inside face of the cabinet, on the opposite side of where the hinges are located. Magnetic strips will be placed along the cabinet while a thin piece of magnetic metal will be glued or screwed onto the door. Once the door closes, the magnet keeps the door closed until it is pulled open again.

Other types of magnetic cupboard catches include pressure catches. Pressure catches follow the same principle, only to open the door you first push inward. This activates the pressure valve and pushes the door slightly outward, making it easier to grab and open. Once the door is closed, the pressure valve is reset.

Grabbers are a classification of catch that includes plastic door catches and are a two-piece system with a male and female end. Place the male end inside the door and the female end on the bottom of the cabinet. Upon closing, the male end will enter the female end and snap into place. Upon pulling on the door with a little extra force, the male end will release from the female end.
